June update

Dear Burslem Port supporter

We've had another busy month, and it was great to welcome new volunteers at several of our work parties in May. As I write this, the Etruria Canals Festival has just come to an end. It it is always good to talk with people who are interested in our project.

At the last few work parties we have done a lot of litter picking and cutting back of vegetation, making good use of the new strimmer which will allow us to better manage the site. So far it has been used near to the Trent & Mersey Canal, as well as at the opposite end of the Branch Canal near to the footbridge.

For safety reasons, we only use power tools when there is a trained first aider on site so please get in touch if you are able to give any time in this way as we only have a couple of first aiders among the pool of volunteers at present. If we do not know in advance that there will be a first aider available we do not bring power tools to site. If you have not used this kind of equipment before but would like to learn this new skill we can train you to use it. Again, please let us know in advance and we will ensure that there someone available to do this. Please note that volunteers under the age of 18 cannot use power tools, for insurance reasons.

We've had a couple of people contact us to say they will be joining in with future work parties which is much appreciated. The more volunteers who join our work parties, the more we can achieve. We are still clearing the line of the canal but hope to start laying out the heritage interpretation trail this summer.

Work parties in the rest of this month will be on Saturday 11th and 25th, plus Tuesday 28th.

Work parties run from 10am to 3pm. Volunteers are welcome for a couple of hours or all day. Meet at Luke St, Middleport, Stoke on Trent, ST6 3LY. All tools and equipment will be provided. Volunteers are advised to wear old clothes, stout shoes and to bring waterproofs in case of rain and a packed lunch if staying all day.

For further information contact Steve Wood on 07976 805858 or by email steve@burslemport.org.uk. Any changes are advertised via our Facebook and Twitter pages, as that is the quickest way to reach people. Please let Steve know if you are planning to attend and he will make sure that you are aware if any event has to be altered or postponed.

Thank you for your support
